Cross Species Egg Sitting
We have this speckled hen, laid, hatched, and raised by a real chicken right here on the farm. She has learned a new trick of late. She has figured out the super secret entrance to the Porch Cat Lair, aka the freezer room.
Our house has several rooms that were added onto over the years. Hence we have a window in the kitchen that over looks the laundry room. And the laundry room has a lovely large window that overlooks the freezer room. The doors follow suit, each room was built with an outdoor door.
So, the freezer room has a very small, narrow window that might have once been called an arrow slit window in less civilized times. It’s perfect for letting semi-feral porch cats in to sleep and eat in a secure location, yet keep idiot humans, dogs, bears, elk, mountain lions, and great horned owls out.
But now we have this clever chicken who has figured it out. And she is laying eggs in the the freezer room, on top of the freezer on the cat blanket. She also eats the cat food, which is probably the most troubling bit. There’s chicken in the dryfood……we may have to switch dryfood, at least temporarily, to a non-chicken variety.
And the truly odd thing is that Phil (our easily spooked cat) has taken to curling up on the egg after the hen leaves, keeping it toasty warm for us.
Odd. Just plain odd.
